The 3 ways to buy a bus ticket in Malaysia

ChannelHow it worksAdvantagesWatch out for
Online comparator (12Go) Search your route, compare every company and pay online All operators, seat classes, terminals and ratings on one page; e-ticket by e-mail Read the exact departure terminal and seat class on your ticket
Bus terminal counter Buy at the company counter in the terminal, on the day or in advance No need to book online Popular departure times can be full; you only compare what is on sale at that terminal
Rail operator website For trains, buy from the operator: kliaekspres.com (airport trains) or ktmb.com.my (KTM trains) Official source for train fares and timetables Covers trains only, not coaches

Booking on 12Go in 5 steps

1

Search your route and date

Enter your departure and arrival cities and your travel date. On Kuala Lumpur → Singapore you will see more than 600 bus departures in a day.

2

Choose bus, train, ferry or flight

Many routes mix several modes: Kuala Lumpur → KLIA airport has coaches and trains, Langkawi → Koh Lipe has boats, Kuala Lumpur → Kota Bharu has coaches and flights.

3

Compare rating, seat class and terminal

Each departure shows the company, its customer rating, the seat class (Express, Executive, VIP, SVIP…) and the departure terminal. Check that the terminal suits you.

4

Pay online

The price shown is per adult, taxes included. Enter the passenger names exactly as in the passports — essential on buses to Singapore or Thailand.

5

Keep your e-ticket on your phone

You receive the ticket by e-mail. Keep it on your phone with the name of the departure terminal, and arrive early.

6 things to check before you pay

The departure terminal

In Kuala Lumpur most long-distance coaches leave from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), but not all: StarMart leaves from Berjaya Times Square, the airport coaches and RWT Express to Genting from KL Sentral, Pahang Lin Siong from Terminal Bersepadu Gombak, some Hat Yai coaches from Hentian Duta. Check the name on your ticket.

The seat class

"Express", "Executive 1X2", "VIP", "SVIP", "27-seat" or "40-seat": on the same route these are different levels of comfort and price. On a 5-hour trip, a roomier seat can be worth a few euros more.

Generic departure points

Some listings simply show "Kuala Lumpur" or "Malacca" as the departure point. In that case, look for the exact address on your e-ticket before the day of travel.

Singapore and Thailand buses

On cross-border buses you get off at the border posts for the formalities. Singapore asks for an online arrival card within 3 days before arrival, Thailand for the TDAC. Read our border and entry guide.

Borneo is separate

Sabah and Sarawak are on Borneo: there is no bus from the Malaysian peninsula. On 12Go, Kuching → Kota Kinabalu showed only flights (from €34.14). On Borneo itself, Kuching → Miri has buses (about 14 h 45, from €23.31).

Private transfers

Hotel-to-hotel transfers are listed alongside coaches but are priced per vehicle (often €100 to €400). Don't mistake them for a coach seat. Compare with our bus prices and company reviews.

When should you book?

On the main routes, departures are plentiful — on 24 October 2026, 12Go listed 639 bus departures from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, 563 to Penang and 541 to Johor Bahru. A few days ahead is usually enough if your schedule is flexible.

Book earlier on routes with few departures: Kuala Lumpur → Mersing (3 coaches that day), Kuala Lumpur → Taman Negara (3 coaches and 2 minivans), Kuala Lumpur and Penang → Cameron Highlands (about 10 coaches from each city), or if you want a precise time or seat class.

Booking a bus in Malaysia: your questions

Can I book Malaysian buses online?
Yes. On 12Go you can compare and book most operators on the main routes — Billion Stars, Super Nice, StarMart, KKKL, 707, CS Travel, Transnasional and many others — and receive an e-ticket by e-mail.
Where do buses leave from in Kuala Lumpur?
Mostly from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan). Exceptions in our sample: KL Sentral (airport coaches, RWT Express to Genting, airport trains), Berjaya Times Square (StarMart), Terminal Bersepadu Gombak (Pahang Lin Siong to Cameron Highlands) and Hentian Duta (Super Nice to Hat Yai).
How far in advance should I book?
On busy routes such as Kuala Lumpur → Singapore or Penang, a few days is usually enough. Book earlier for routes with only a few daily departures (Mersing, Taman Negara, Cameron Highlands) or for a specific time.
Can I book the airport train on 12Go?
Yes: KLIA Ekspres (€12, about 33 min) and KLIA Transit (€9.03–12) were listed on 12Go. You can also buy from the operator, Express Rail Link, on kliaekspres.com.
Can I take a bus to Langkawi?
Langkawi is an island. For 24 October 2026, 12Go listed only flights from Penang (from €21.78) and Kuala Lumpur (from €34.14).
